OPEC Secretary General visits the Emirate of Fujairah, meets its Ruler

Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, 22 September 2021--OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, visited the Emirate of Fujairah as part of his mission to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

During the visit, the Secretary General called on HH Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah and Member of the UAE’s Supreme Council. He also toured the headquarters of the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone and the Emirate’s port. He also attended a ceremony for launching the second phase of the Fujairah Storage Complex.

During his meeting with Sheikh Hamad, the Secretary General congratulated the Sheikh on his 47th year as Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah.

“His exemplary leadership has brought enormous economic, social and educational progress to Fujairah, and his strategic forwarding-thinking enabled Fujairah to become one of the major driving forces in the Emirate's economy,” Barkindo said.

Barkindo also commended the efforts to transform the Port of Fujairah into a premier hub for bunkering, oil storage and trading activity.

The Secretary General underscored the efforts carried out by the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC)’s 23 oil-producing countries in the interest of oil market stability, highlighting the leading and instrumental role played by the UAE and its Energy and Infrastructure Minister, HE Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei.

OPEC is deeply indebted to the UAE for the leading role it has played and continues to play in the affairs of OPEC and the DoC, Barkindo stated.

At the ceremony, the Secretary General commended the achievements reached by Brooge Petroleum and Gas Investment Company (BPGIC), noting that the investment the firm is making demonstrate a bedrock commitment to innovate and grow this all-important industry.

He applauded the efforts exerted in the development of the port, which he said have helped bolster the activities of the oil and gas industry. He also said they have improved the storage capabilities, services and facilities offered to investors in the region.

Barkindo also emphasized that continuous investment at an adequate level is required across the supply chain to meet the growing demand for oil in the coming decades, noting that this will support sustainable stability in the global oil market and avoid volatility.

The Secretary General yesterday participated in the opening session of Gastech 2021 in the Emirate of Dubai, during which he shared a stage with Minister Al Mazrouei, among others.
