Barkindo congratulates Nigeria’s leadership on its 50th Anniversary in OPEC

Vienna, Austria, 12 July 2021--OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, conveyed his profound and heartfelt congratulations to the leaders and people of Nigeria on the occasion of its golden anniversary since becoming an OPEC Member Country.

In a letter addressed to HE Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria, the Secretary General stated: “Mr. President, all of us in the OPEC family know the enormous debt of gratitude we owe you for the pivotal role you played in our historic achievements. Your inspirational leadership, visionary courage and diplomatic nous were instrumental in bringing together OPEC and non-OPEC countries and reaching consensus in recent years, particularly through the adoption of the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) on 10 December 2016 and the ‘Charter of Cooperation’ signed on 2 July 2019.”

The Secretary General addressed a similar letter to HE Timipre Sylva, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.

“Over the years, Nigeria has been at the forefront of expanding OPEC’s dialogues with consumer and producer countries, further contributing to market stability,” Barkindo said, adding, “You have been instrumental in many of the Organization’s achievements over the years.”

Nigeria joined OPEC on 12 July 1971.
