OPEC conveys its condolences on the passing of Dr Abderrahman Khene

Vienna, Austria, 15 December 2020--OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, and staff members of the Secretariat have offered their deep and sincere condolences following the sad passing of former OPEC Secretary General, HE Dr Abderrahman Khene of Algeria, aged 89.

Dr Khene played a key role in the affairs of the Organization as Secretary General from 1973 to 1974.

Barkindo said: “It is with a great sadness and sorrow that we at the OPEC Secretariat have learned about the sad passing of Dr Abderrahman Khene, who served the Organization with great commitment as Secretary General during a critical period in OPEC’s journey.” He participated in the negotiations with oil companies on the revision of fiscal terms.

In referencing Algeria, Barkindo also noted that “since it joined OPEC in 1969, Algeria has generously provided the Organization with many exemplary leaders that have tirelessly supported OPEC and its objectives.”

Dr Khene served his home country as Minister of Public Works; Member of the Board of Directors of SNREPAL in the 1960s, which focused on developing the hydrocarbon and industry sectors; and State Secretary and Head of the Finance Department in the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic.

Dr Khene also headed the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

He was born in 1931 in Collo, Algeria. He studied medicine at the University of Algeria.
