OPEC Secretary General attends 22nd GECF Ministerial Meeting

Vienna, Austria, 12 November 2020--OPEC Secretary General, Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, today participated in the 22nd Meeting of the GECF Ministerial via videoconference.

The meeting was hosted by Algeria under the Chairmanship of Abdelmadjid Attar, Algerian Minister of Energy, who also serves as the President of the OPEC Conference this year.

In his remarks, Secretary General Barkindo commended the exceptional leadership roles of Minister Attar, who is currently chairing two of the energy world’s leading organizations – OPEC and GECF.

“This is a testimony, not only to your personal attributes as a leader and an astute diplomat, but also speaks to the prominence of Algeria as a leading provider of the world’s precious oil and gas resources,” he said.

Barkindo also lauded the new heights reached in the ongoing, fruitful cooperation between the two organizations under the framework of the OPEC-GECF Energy Dialogue.

In this regard, he recognized the leading role played by Yury Sentyurin, GECF Secretary General, in deepening the ties between both organizations.

Reference was made to the highly successful inaugural High-Level Meeting of the OPEC-GECF Energy Dialogue, which was held on 4 November 2020.

The Secretary General thanked the GECF for their valuable contribution to OPEC’s World Oil Outlook 2020 on the prospects of LNG in the post-COVID-19 era.

“OPEC looks forward to having the opportunity to contribute an oil-related feature to the GECF’s flagship publication, the Global Gas Outlook,” he added.

Looking ahead, Barkindo underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation and dialogue to address global challenges faced by the industry.

“The potential of this Dialogue is unlimited, and even that much more essential now, as, together, we seek to unite with all of our industry stakeholders to combat the ongoing challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and its massive repercussions for the energy markets,” he stated.

Today’s participation in this high-level meeting follows the OPEC’s successful participation in the GECF Ministerial Roundtable on Natural Gas, which was held yesterday, 11 November.
