OPEC’s Secretary General meets with India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister

New Delhi, India, 10 April 2018--OPEC’s Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo and an OPEC delegation met today in New Delhi with HE Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of India, and an accompanying Indian delegation.

The Secretary General thanked HE Pradhan for hosting the International Energy Forum’s (IEF) 16th Ministerial Meeting in the historic city of New Delhi and underscored the significance of this widely recognized global producer and consumer policy and dialogue platform. They also discussed the landmark ‘Declaration of Cooperation’ between 24 OPEC and non-OPEC producing countries, energy poverty and further enhancing collaboration between India and OPEC.

HE Pradhan and HE Barkindo underscored the growing cooperation between India and OPEC, including the high-level India-OPEC Energy Dialogue, which held its second session in May 2017 and OPEC’s participation at the first India Energy Forum in October 2017. The Secretary General encouraged closer collaboration between experts in India and the OPEC Secretariat, in particular regarding OPEC’s in-depth analysis of the country’s evolving energy market.

The OPEC Secretary General reiterated the importance of India as an international engine for growth and its rising status in the world economy. He also expressed his pleasure that HE Pradhan will lead major Indian oil and gas companies to the 7th OPEC International Seminar, to be held on 20-21 June, 2018 at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. HE Pradhan made reference to the significant investments being made by India in oil, and more generally energy, as well as the need for broader energy accessibility, which he viewed as a high priority.

Both parties agreed to hold their next high-level India-OPEC Energy Dialogue in the second half of 2018.

The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the IEF Ministerial Meeting, which is being held from 10-12 April.
